Colebrook, Connecticut
Colebrook was incorporated as a town in 1779, carved out of portions of New Hartford and Winchester during the American Revolutionary War period. The town was named after Colebrook, New Hampshire, and developed as a rural agricultural community in the Litchfield Hills region of northwestern Connecticut. Throughout the 19th century, it remained one of Connecticut’s smallest towns, with its economy centered around farming, lumber mills, and later, summer tourism.Did you know? Colebrook is home to the Colebrook River Lake, which was created in 1969 as part of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control project, making it one of Connecticut’s newest major bodies of water and dramatically changing the town’s landscape and recreational opportunities.
